our temperatures continue to be in the 70s here at 4:25 in the morning. lots of humidity. you get the idea we'll off to another warm and humid start to the day and another hot one but we've got some changes. we're on the right side of the screen there. out to the west, all that flashing you see out towards indianapolis, this is a cold front which will object the march. and by mid- to late afternoon will likely spark off some showers and storms around here. it will eventually bring us some cooler and drier air. our temperatures today under partial sunshine should top out about 90 degrees with a late day storm so be ready for it. more details coming up. back to you. a deadly midair collision involving two semiautomatic planes over fauquier county. one pilot was able to land and walk away from the wreckage.

the other plane crashed about a mile away. the pilot and passenger of that plane were both killed. today, fans will pay tribute to chuck brown. thousands are expected to gather at the howard theater for a public viewing. on thursday, a public memorial service will be held from noon until 3:00 at the washington convention center. president obama marked a milestone monday speaking at the vietnam veterans memorial for the first time as commander in chief. the president was joined by vice president bideen and the secretary. defense among others. >> but there were many vietnam veterans who say they couldn't get into a ceremony they've been attending for years. tom fitzgerald has the story. >> reporter: the president arrived at the vietnam veterans memorial to the strains of hail to the chief. thousands gathered here as they do every year for one singular

purpose. >> today is memorial day. >> reporter: the president honored the 58,282 names on the wall who died in vietnam, thanked surviving vietnam veterans for reaching out to today's veterans. >> you cared for those who followed. you made it your mission to make sure today's troops get the respect and support that all too often did you not receive. >> reporter: 2012 marks important milestones for the vietnam war with the 30th anniversary of this memorial. >> we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the vietnam war, a war that occupies a central place in the american story. >> we feel a common resolve on memorial day to pause if only for a moment and to remember. >> reporter: the president's appearance meant changes in security and access, changes that many veterans tell us it

made it very difficult if not impossible for them to get into their own memorial. many vietnam veterans said they were unaware of the ticketing and entry rules. >> i came down to seat president. we can't even see him. -- i came down to see the president. >> my other buddy got a bad knee. i don't think he will make it down here. >> reporter: the memorial did open to the general public after the president left but many vietnam veterans told us they felt kept apart from a place they feel is an important part of them. >> i've gone to that service at 1:00 for 10 years. i've got a lot of friends on the wall and i wanted to pay my respects and i can't do that. >> reporter: tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. >> lee allen of the vietnam memorial fund contacted us yesterday and said they are

average daytime high still is. we'll be near 90 again this afternoon. >> again. what were we yesterday? >> 90. >> let's do it again. >> we need another day at the pool. >> the radar showing the flashing there. that is a lot of thunderstorm activity out to the west in indiana, just west of indianapolis at this hour. that will be moving in later today. much of your day will be sunny and bright and hot and then eventually the clouds will start to move in with a better and better chance of scattered showers and storms. 77 at reagan national. humidity, 76%. winds out of the south and west at 12. i don't believe it. forecast for today, hazy, hot and humid. eventually some thunderstorm activity. highs about 90 degrees.

cooler weather on the way. >> okay. >> thank you. let's say hello to julie wright and get the latest on traffic. >> we are back to work on a tuesday so keep your eyes peeled as you make your way around the capital beltway. your lanes here are open. no problems report northbound along 395 leaving the beltway and continuing out across the 14th street bridge. you will find the lanes are open in each direction on the beltway between college park and bethesda. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. new this morning, police in maryland are investigating a deadly two-car crash in clinton. one of the cars ended up in the brush off the road. the accident happened about 11:00 last night near branch avenue and wood yard road. one person was killed. all the roads are back open. two small planes collided in midair yesterday afternoon over bealeton, virginia. this is in fauquier county. the pilot of a piper pa-28 was

able to glide through a tree line and somehow managed to land. he walked away from the wreckage. it became clear to a man in the area that he was becoming delirious. >> his primary concern coming across the field profusely bleeding from the left eyebrow and his nose was to call the faa. >> the other plane crashed into a yard and caught fire about a mile away. the pilot and passenger were both killed. fortunately, no one on the ground was hurt. the cause of the collision is still under investigation. hard to believe it has been nearly two weeks since we lost him. thousands of fans are now expected to gather to say good- bye to d.c. music legend chuck brown. >> today, the family is holding a public viewing at the the

howard theater. melanie alnwick has more on this. >> reporter: the street closures have already begun with the first closure starting at 3:00 behind me, t street that runs route rite -- runs right in front of the howard theater. the 75-year-old godfather of go- go died may 17th from complications of pneumonia after a lengthy hospital stay. since then, fans have been coming to this area to leave tokens of respect and appreciation. brown was scheduled to play a show here on april # 1st but he fell ill just days before that. today, the formal farewell to chuck brown begins first with a public viewing and family has found several ways for the fans to celebrate him.

>> we'll have his music playing, a photo montage. >> reporter: four streets surrounding the howard theater willing closed from 9:30:00 a.m. until midnight. t street will be expanded. that closure goes from ninth to florida. and seventh street between florida and s, eighth street between florida and s. and also because it is expected to be very hot today, there will be emergency personnel stationed just down the street here. we do expect thousands of people to be standing in line here in these 90-degree temperatures today. there will be water stations and people here to care for anybody who may be overcome by the heat. one other thing people should know, no cameras allowed and that includes no cell phone cameras. they should be prepared to leave them at home or leave them at the door. >> i know you will continue to remind folks all morning. thank you. checking other local headlines, police officers trying to serve a misdemeanor warrant shot a man in mount vernon. fay faction investigators say the man opened the door of an

apartment on old mill court and confronted one of the officer ways knife and refused to drop it. the officer shot the man in the chest. the man was taken to the hospital for treatment. police say they have had past run-ins with the same individual. the coast guard has called off the search for a missing 21- year-old who advertise and in the chesapeake bay. he went swimming with friends on sunday and disappeared near howell point. crews have found the body of a man thrown from a boat in quip county sunday night. police have not released husband name. two other people in the boat were seriously hurt. for the first time as commander in chief, president obama spoke at the vietnam veterans memorial. the president, vice president, secretary of defense and thousands of veterans and civilians attended a ceremony in honor of memorial day. the president thanked surviving vietnam vets for reaching out

where a nag tight -- a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit italy. it is the same region where a strong earthquake hit earlier this month killing seven people and causing some buildings to collapse. at least one mayor says his town has suffered fatalities in this latest quake. will continue to follow this this morning. a deadly fire at a shopping mall in qatar leaves at least 19 people dead. thirteen of the victims were children. the fire broke out early yesterday morning in the capital city of doha. some people died as rescue are is battled the flames trying to reach a child care center. an armed man is still holed up on a trane at a college campus in texas. it started when a man barricaded himself in the cab

system moving in from the west later this afternoon, really during the nighttime hours. here is some heat for you. 77degrees in washington. 80 in quantico. something is up with your thermometer. i want to get down there. 77 in annapolis. yesterday, we had some 60s off to the north and west. not the case today. 73 out at dulles. 73 in gaithersburg. and a lot of humidity as well. our dew point temperatures are running in the upper 60s. so not a terribly comfortable start to your morning. sentinel sat rad, we are quiet right now. you can see the leading edge. that is our cold front still several hours away. late this afternoon during the evening hours, we'll start to see some showers and storms bubble up. that will start the transition into a cooler and drier air mass. it will take a couple of days to actually get that cooler and drier air in. it will start to feel better.

by thursday, our temperatures will be about 80 degrees with less humidity. just hang in there. no heat advisory today. got to get my letters to fit on the map as well. scattered afternoon showers and storms. early showers and storms tonight. cloudy overnight. 71 the overnight low. we'll continue to see the showers during the overnight hours. a little better tomorrow. thursday, 81 and then friday and saturday, could be some more showers. look at saturday's high, only 77 degrees. let's do some traffic. >> is sarah complaining about 90 degrees? honey, it is summer. >> no, it's not. it's spring. >> welcome to my world. it is summer. will and i sat out on the deck all weekend long in the blow-up pool with the nutty buddies.

once in space, the vessel docking last friday to cheers from earth. that docking didn't go as planned either. according to space x's founder. >> dragon has these things called lasers. one of the lasers wasn't working well. we had to recalibrate the laser and tighten the beam and then it did work and we were table to dock. >> reporter: it takes some 25 hours to unload more than a thousand pounds of supplies include food, clothing and technology. it is not all work and no play up there. some new pictures from aboard the iss including these time lapse photos of the space station, the earth and stars. we're told the astronaut took multiple 30 second exposures and blended the photos on his computer. when hatch closes wednesday, the spacex capsule will be prepped to return to earth loaded with 1300 pounds of return cargo. cargo.

a debate rages on over whether to hold the line on student loan interest rate. >> a different discussion is being held on whether college students are majoring in the right areas to pay off the loans. here is doug mcelway. >> reporter: with graduation season now upon us, a new crop of workers is being thrown 199job market with little room to accommodate them. >> today, the schools don't emphasize the importance of commerce and engineering technology. instead, there is a lot of emphasis on social history and on doing good in the world.
